Our Services

We are a furniture repair and restoration shop. The shop has its beginnings in the '70s in Old Saybrook, CT. Since 1983 Bob Mittelhauser has been the owner and is personally involved in every project. He and his wife, Karen Hudson, perform all the work. Bob does the paint stripping, repairs and refinishing; Karen does the seat weaving which includes caning, various weaves and rushing.

Finish Removal is most often the best way to begin refinishing a piece of furniture. We can remove all the finish or be selective and remove finish on certain areas only, which is preferred on antique restoration. We perform this service on a stripping tray, hand stripping every piece. We don't use a tank to dip the furniture. We strip wood and most metals as well as boat parts and architectural pieces like doors and mantels.

Refinishing is done by hand sanding the piece, staining the desired color and spraying a lacquer finish in gloss or satin sheen; from tiny knobs to Grand Pianos. We match colors by using a sample item from a piece in your room that has the color you want or by predetermining the color. Painting is also a fine option and we do it well. We paint wicker.

Repairs can add years of service to your furniture. Chairs and tables that have an annoying wiggle can be retightened; dresser drawers that don't slide smoothly can be rebuilt. Most pieces broken or missing can be remade.

Seat Weaving can also add years of service to your chairs. We cane the traditional woven cane pattern, and press cane various styles. We also weave splint, herringbone and porch weave. We use rattan, binder cane, oak and ash splint, and shaker tape. We rush seats in paper or pre-twisted natural rush. We also do Danish Cord seating.
